Apply for a summer job

Read a job advert and a careers adviser's tips. Then write an application email for a summer job, real or invented, and revise it.

Så fungerar det

We want to show an employer that we suit the job. A good application answers three questions: which job, why you want it, and why you are a good choice. Match your strengths to the advert: if it asks for someone friendly and reliable, give an example that proves you are.

Use a formal but warm register: Dear …, I am writing to apply for …, I would welcome the opportunity to … Avoid contractions and slang, and close with Kind regards or Yours sincerely. Your experience can come from school, sport, clubs or helping at home.

I am writing to apply for the position of summer assistant, which was advertised on your website.

Summer assistant wanted, and how to apply

SUMMER ASSISTANT WANTED Greenhill Garden Centre is looking for two friendly and reliable young people (15+) to join our team from late June to mid-August. Tasks include watering plants, helping customers find products, keeping the shop tidy and helping in our café at busy times. No experience is necessary, as full training will be given. We offer flexible hours, a staff discount and a friendly working environment. To apply, send a short email explaining why you would like the job and what you could bring to the team to jobs@greenhill.example by 15 May. TIPS FROM OUR CAREERS ADVISER Many young people never send an application because they think they have nothing to write. In fact, almost everyone has relevant experience. Have you looked after younger siblings, trained a team, helped a neighbour or organised a school event? All of these show skills that employers value, such as responsibility, teamwork and good communication. Read the advert carefully and underline the qualities the employer is asking for. Then choose one example for each quality. It is much more convincing to write "I help coach the under-nines football team every Saturday, so I am used to staying calm when things get busy" than simply "I am calm". Keep your email short: three or four paragraphs are enough. Start by saying which job you are applying for and where you saw it. Explain why you want this particular job, because employers like applicants who have thought about their workplace. Finish politely and say when you are available. Finally, check your spelling and ask someone to read it. A careless mistake in the first line can make a bad first impression, even if the rest is excellent.
